The Shokugan Tradition Behind Bandai Wafer Cards

Japan’s shokugan industry has combined small collectibles with candy and biscuits since the 1980s, with some of its roots in the Bikkuriman sticker boom of that decade. Bandai has applied this format to dozens of major franchises, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is among them.

The wafer card is shokugan at its most streamlined: a small trading card sold blind alongside a flat wafer biscuit. Sets are randomized across a run, and collectors work through packs to assemble a complete lineup. This particular card carries a metallic finish — a reflective, foil-treated surface that distinguishes it from the standard printed versions in the same series. Metallic cards are typically positioned in the higher-rarity tier within a run, functioning as a distinct variant rather than an ordinary duplicate.

Shokugan products are produced for the Japanese domestic market and sold through convenience stores, supermarkets, and hobby shops. There is no official international distribution, so collectors outside Japan obtain these cards exclusively through import.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and the World of Battle Tendency

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hirohiko Araki’s manga that launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1987, remains in serialization today. Part 2 — Battle Tendency, the subtitle on this card — ran from 1987 to 1989 across volumes five through twelve. Its protagonist is Joseph Joestar, grandson of Part 1’s Jonathan, and its antagonists are the Pillar Men: an ancient prehuman species of formidable physical power. The central technique is Hamon, a life-energy channeled through controlled breathing, which Joseph and his allies must master to have any chance in the conflict. David Production’s anime adaptation aired in 2012–2013, covering both parts back to back and bringing the series to streaming audiences worldwide.

Lisa Lisa: Hamon Master and Hidden Mother

Lisa Lisa — full name Elizabeth Joestar — is the Hamon master who trains Joseph and his companion Caesar Zeppeli. Her appearance is immediately distinctive: long dark hair, a slender frame, a dark off-shoulder costume, and a signature scarf. That scarf, known as the Aja scarf, is not purely decorative — it conducts Hamon and serves as an active tool in battle.

Late in Part 2, her role takes an unexpected turn. It is revealed that Lisa Lisa is Joseph’s biological mother. Years of intensive Hamon practice have held her physical appearance far younger than her true age — she is well past fifty — and the revelation reshapes everything the audience has understood about her up to that point.
