Vritra Choco Egg Figure from Furuta's Saikyo-O Zukan Series
The Item and the Franchise It Comes From
This is a pre-painted miniature plastic figure from Furuta Seika, produced as part of the company’s Choco Egg line and tied to the Saikyo-O Zukan franchise. Furuta’s Choco Egg is a chocolate treat with a capsule inside containing a small collectible figure — you don’t know which character you’ll receive until you open it. The Vritra figure in this series is rendered in translucent teal with gradient paintwork and designed as a bipedal dragon with a large head frill and a long curved tail. It comes with a clear display stand for freestanding presentation, and the sculpt leans into Japanese dragon aesthetics rather than the serpentine imagery of Vritra’s ancient source material.
Saikyo-O Zukan: Japan’s Battle-Format Book Phenomenon
Saikyo-O Zukan is a series of illustrated books published by Gakken Plus. Each volume focuses on a single category of creatures or beings — dinosaurs, insects, deep-sea animals, mythological figures, dragons — and structures the content as a bracket tournament, pitting subjects against each other to determine the ultimate strongest. The premise is straightforward, but it landed perfectly with Japanese elementary-age readers from the late 2010s onward, and the series grew into a publishing phenomenon with cumulative sales in the millions of copies. An anime adaptation followed, widening the franchise’s reach considerably. Licensed merchandise expanded alongside: card games, toys, and collaborations with established product lines — including this Choco Egg tie-in from Furuta Seika.
Vritra’s Origins and the Shokugan Tradition Behind the Figure
Vritra comes from the Rigveda, among the oldest texts in the Hindu tradition. In that mythology, Vritra is a vast serpentine asura — a being of obstruction — whose Sanskrit name translates roughly as “enveloper” or “one who blocks.” The god Indra defeats Vritra to free the rivers the creature has dammed. In Japanese popular culture, Vritra has appeared across multiple RPGs and anime series as a recognized mythological figure, which made it a natural fit for a franchise built around placing powerful beings in competition. In the Saikyo-O Zukan context, the character most likely appears in a volume covering dragons or mythological creatures, though the specific volume has not been confirmed from primary sources.
The format this figure arrives in — shokugan, or food toy — has its own distinct history in Japan. Furuta’s Choco Egg launched around 1999 and drew unusual attention for the quality of its animal figures, pulling adult collectors toward a product otherwise aimed at children. The blind-box structure has always been central to the line: each purchase yields one figure whose identity stays hidden until the capsule opens. Furuta has since collaborated with a wide range of franchises, from Pokemon to One Piece to Kamen Rider, and the Saikyo-O Zukan tie-in arrived during that series’ peak years of popularity. Because the Choco Egg line circulates primarily through Japanese domestic retail channels, figures from specific collaborations reach international buyers almost exclusively through direct export from Japan.
