A Small Figure From a Big Japanese Food-Toy Tradition

This is a pre-painted plastic bust figure from Japan’s Choco Egg line — a shokugan (food-toy) format in which a miniature collectible is sealed inside an egg-shaped chocolate candy. The piece depicts Shukichi Haneda from Detective Conan, sculpted from the chest up on a circular dark-brown base. Non-articulated and single-piece, it was sold in blind-box style: the character inside is unknown until the chocolate is opened.

The format was developed primarily by Furuta Confectionery, whose 1999 series of miniature wildlife figures became a national phenomenon in Japan. Furuta later licensed popular anime franchises, and Detective Conan characters joined the lineup alongside many others. Sold in convenience stores and supermarkets, Choco Egg figures are compact and fully painted — part of Japan’s broader shokugan tradition, which stretches back to the 1980s.

Who Is Shukichi Haneda?

Detective Conan (known as Case Closed in North America) is a mystery manga by Gosho Aoyama, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since 1994 and still ongoing. The anime began in 1996, with a theatrical film released every year. It is one of Japan’s most enduring franchises, with a strong fanbase across East and Southeast Asia and growing recognition among anime audiences worldwide.

Shukichi Haneda is a professional shogi player in the series. Shogi is a centuries-old Japanese board game with an active professional league, and Shukichi is depicted as a skilled and serious practitioner — hence the kimono, which fits naturally with the traditional world of professional shogi. He is also a member of the Akai family: younger brother of FBI agent Shuichi Akai, older brother of detective Masumi Sera. The Akai family is among the most plot-central and fan-followed groups in the series, and Shukichi is in a confirmed relationship with traffic officer Yumi Miyamoto, adding further presence as a recurring character.

Note: Detective Conan also features a separate character named Koji Haneda — a deceased shogi player with his own distinct storyline. The two are different individuals and should not be confused.

Shogi, the Akai Family, and the International Collector Angle

The 2024 theatrical film “The Million-Dollar Pentagram” placed shogi at the center of its story, raising Shukichi’s profile considerably among both longtime fans and newer viewers. As one of the series’ few characters defined by shogi — a discipline with no direct Western counterpart — he carries cultural specificity that extends beyond standard anime character design.

For collectors outside Japan, the kimono sculpt offers a further point of interest: traditional Japanese dress rendered within an anime collectible context. Choco Egg figures themselves are artifacts of Japan’s shokugan culture — a product category that developed in Japan from the 1980s onward and remains largely unfamiliar to Western markets, giving these small figures their own documentary interest as examples of everyday Japanese consumer culture. Because the Akai family draws one of the most devoted followings in the Detective Conan fandom, Shukichi’s appeal reaches well beyond that of a peripheral supporting character.
