Japan’s Beloved Cat Delinquent Brand

Nameneko — the full catchphrase “Namennayo” gave the brand its wider name — began in the early 1980s with photographer Tsuda Akira, who dressed real kittens in miniature yankii-style costumes: student uniforms, headbands, gang jackets. The wordplay at its core is hard to beat. “Namennayo” carries the rough street-slang sense of “don’t underestimate me,” while “nameru” also means “to lick” — which is, of course, what cats spend their days doing. That double meaning is the entire joke, and Japan ran with it. Between roughly 1981 and 1983, Nameneko imagery spread across posters, stickers, and the product that defined the brand’s identity most sharply: cards formatted to look exactly like official Japanese licenses and certificates.

Torakichi and the Parody License Format

The name Torakichi combines “tora” — the Japanese word for tiger, used colloquially for tabby cats — with “kichi,” a classic masculine name ending, making him something like Lucky Tiger. The card issues him a purely fictional credential: First-Class Cat Mansion Architect, with listed specialties that include sandbox construction and fence pathway design. His birthdate is recorded as February 28, 1981, placing him squarely at the height of the original Nameneko boom. The expiry field reads “valid until licked,” a running gag that appears throughout the series.

One detail is worth noting: the registration date on the card is listed as 1996. A character born in 1981 with a mid-1990s registration date suggests this card may belong to a revival or continuation of the line rather than original early-1980s merchandise — though that cannot be confirmed from the card alone. The numbered format, with Torakichi at #13, points to a broader series spanning multiple characters.

Why Nameneko Still Resonates

The original license-style cards were so convincing in format, and so popular in their era, that teenagers actually kept them in their wallets as if they were real ID. That kind of object — a deadpan spoof of official documentation — travels across cultures without needing translation. The image of a small cat glaring out from something that looks like a government-issued certificate is immediately readable, in any language.

Nameneko also turns out to be an early prototype of something the internet later made universal: cats dressed up, cats given names and backstories, cats posed with deliberate attitude. By the early 1980s, Tsuda Akira was already doing all of that in print. For anyone drawn to the yankii aesthetic that continues to appear in Japanese fashion, music, and animation, or to Showa-era pop culture more broadly, a numbered card from this series is a compact, tangible piece of that history. And because Torakichi is #13, there are plenty of other characters in the line still to find.
