A Bottle Cap That Became a Diorama

The bottle cap figure was a format specific to Japanese beverage marketing in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rather than a toy packaged alongside food, the collectible was built directly into the bottle cap itself — the plastic cap serving as the display base, with a sculpted scene mounted on top. In Vol.4 of the Monsters Meet Pepsi Part 1 series, that scene is a black coffin with a purple interior lining, inside which Pepsiman lies in repose. The figure itself is rendered in two tones — silver on the left half, dark navy on the right — and rests on a base of gray rock or skull-shaped sculpting. The whole assembly stands as a self-contained miniature diorama rather than a flat badge or simple cap topper.

This format is distinct from shokugan, the food-toy tradition where a small figure comes packaged with candy or a snack. Here the collectible was integrated into the beverage bottle itself. Pepsi and Coca-Cola both ran competing bottle cap figure lines in Japan during this period, and the culture of completing an entire series — and preserving unopened, cap-intact examples as display pieces — was part of how these campaigns were designed to work. The format is no longer produced.

Pepsiman and the Monsters Meet Concept

Pepsiman debuted in Japanese television commercials in the mid-1990s as a character created exclusively for Pepsi’s domestic market. Faceless, voiceless, and clad in silver, he would appear without warning to deliver a cold can — a deliberately absurdist concept that became one of the more recognizable campaigns in Japanese advertising of that era. Pepsiman was a regional creation entirely separate from PepsiCo’s international campaigns, with no presence in markets outside Japan.

In 1999, the character received a PlayStation game developed by KID (Kindle Imagine Develop) and published by Pepsi-Cola Japan. That game was never released internationally, keeping the character’s physical world largely within Japan’s borders.

“Monsters Meet Pepsi Part 1” pairs the mascot with classic monster imagery. Vol.4’s coffin design — black exterior, purple lining, gothic rock-and-skull base — points strongly toward a Dracula motif, though the series title leaves the specific monster identity to the visual language of the objects themselves. The “Part 1” label suggests the series extended further, and the Vol.4 numbering confirms at least four figures exist within this portion of it — though the full scope of the series isn’t definitively documented. The meaning behind the two-tone color split on the Pepsiman figure is similarly unconfirmed, but the monster-meets-mascot concept is visually coherent throughout.

Why This Item Reaches Collectors Beyond Japan

Pepsiman never had a global marketing push, yet the character achieved genuine international recognition through internet culture — particularly English-language YouTube channels and online communities that discovered and amplified the PlayStation game and its accompanying commercials. Because the PS1 game saw no official release outside Japan, all physical merchandise tied to the character carries regional weight for fans who know it only through a screen.

The Monsters Meet Pepsi concept adds a second layer of appeal. The Dracula-adjacent aesthetic — coffin, purple lining, skull-base — speaks to vintage horror collectors as readily as it does to Pepsi enthusiasts, giving this bottle cap figure a dual-fandom pull that most single-franchise promo items don’t have. The diorama format itself is more architecturally involved than the flat cap figures common in the same era, which gives it a display quality that translates well outside its original convenience-store-aisle context. As a Japan-market-only promo item, this type of figure passed through very few hands outside the country where it was sold.
