A Game Accessory With More Than One Life

The Lucario VSTAR Premium Collection Token is an official Pokémon Trading Card Game accessory — a VSTAR marker, the coin-shaped flip token players use to track when they have activated their VSTAR Power during a match. Under TCG rules, a VSTAR Power can only be used once per game; flipping this marker signals that the ability has been spent. That is its practical function. What sets this version apart is the construction: the body is metal, the surface carries a rainbow mirror holographic finish that shifts color with viewing angle, and Lucario’s form is pressed into the metal in relief — embossed rather than flat-printed.

The marker came packaged inside the Lucario VSTAR Premium Collection box, a product released by The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) and believed to be aimed primarily at North American and European markets. The VSTAR mechanic itself debuted in Japan in December 2021 and arrived in English-speaking markets in February 2022 with the Brilliant Stars expansion; the Premium Collection box is estimated to date from the same general period. These boxes paired promo cards and booster packs with a metal VSTAR marker as the centerpiece accessory.

Lucario: From Aura Warrior to Franchise Icon

Lucario is Pokédex No. 448, a Fighting- and Steel-type Pokémon introduced with the fourth generation of games — Diamond and Pearl in 2006. Its defining trait is the ability to sense and manipulate a form of energy called aura, which gives it an intelligence and mysticism uncommon across the franchise. That quality made Lucario a natural lead in the 2005 theatrical film Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, which raised its profile significantly before Diamond and Pearl even launched.

Its addition to the Super Smash Bros. series — from Brawl onward — extended Lucario’s reach into gaming communities well beyond the core Pokémon fanbase. In global Pokémon fan polls it consistently ranks near the top. During the Sword & Shield era, a Lucario VSTAR card also appeared as a notable competitive piece, giving the character relevance on the play side as well as in collections.

What Sets the Metal VSTAR Marker Apart

Standard VSTAR markers distributed in regular booster sets are plastic and relatively plain. The premium collection version is metal, with a weight and solidity that differs noticeably from a typical token. The rainbow mirror holographic surface produces a shifting iridescent effect depending on viewing angle, and the embossed Lucario design adds a sculptural quality that flat printing cannot replicate. Those characteristics make it equally suited to gameplay use or shelf display.

For collectors focused on Sword & Shield-era Pokémon TCG accessories, the VSTAR marker documents a specific moment in the game’s history — the period when V-series mechanics reached their most developed form before the series moved into the Scarlet & Violet era. The Lucario version carries one of the franchise’s most persistently popular characters, making it at home in both TCG accessory collections and Lucario-themed displays.
