The series expanded quickly: a TV anime adaptation began airing in April 2022 on TV Tokyo, the manga moved into Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha), and merchandise spread across major retail chains including Loft and Animate, as well as frequent collaboration with convenience stores such as FamilyMart and Lawson. By 2022–2024, Chiikawa had established itself among the top-performing character franchises in Japan’s domestic goods market.

Hachiware: The Character Behind the Design

Hachiware is Chiikawa’s closest friend and one of the three leads of the series. Visually, the character is immediately distinctive: white with blue-tinged bicolor markings across the face — the split-color pattern that Japanese speakers call hachiware, literally the name of such a marking on a bicolor cat. The character’s name comes directly from this trait. Combined with large black eyes, pink round cheeks, and a small W-shaped mouth, Hachiware’s design translates naturally into the face mascot format — the defining features are concentrated in the face and remain readable at small scale.

In the story, Hachiware is portrayed as bookish and earnest, a character whose quiet sincerity makes the role easy to connect with. That combination of visual clarity and strong character identity has made Hachiware one of the most consistently represented figures across the entire Chiikawa merchandise lineup.
