A Toy Line Born from Gokaiger’s Grand Premise

The Ranger Key Series is a line of small plastic figures manufactured by Bandai Japan for Super Sentai — the Toei tokusatsu franchise that has run continuously since 1975 and serves as the source material for the American Power Rangers series. Each piece has a character-sculpted upper half and a key-shaped lower shaft, designed to slot into the Mobirates: the pirate-themed transformation device from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, the 35th anniversary entry in the Super Sentai franchise.

Gokaiger’s central concept was unlike anything the franchise had done before. Its heroes — a crew of space pirates — fight by channeling the powers of every previous Super Sentai team through physical Ranger Keys. That premise put the heroes from the past 34 series at the center of the show’s story and gave Bandai a natural framework for an expansive toy line. The Ranger Key Series launched alongside Gokaiger in February 2011, and the format continued beyond the show itself. When Gokaiger ended, Bandai extended the line with keys representing characters from successor series — carrying the format forward into new Super Sentai seasons.

The Character Behind the Key: Red Buster

This particular key depicts Red Buster, the red hero of Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters, the 36th Super Sentai series, which aired from February 2012 to February 2013. Hiromu Sakurada transforms into Red Buster, and his suit is one of the more immediately distinctive designs in Super Sentai’s long roster: a red and black two-tone with white trim lines, a numeral “1” motif across the chest, and a buffalo-inspired visor on the helmet. Two prominent ear-like protrusions on either side of the helmet give the silhouette a character that reads clearly even in miniature form.

In the show’s fiction, Hiromu absorbed a specialized energy called Enetron as a child. It grants him exceptional physical ability, but comes with a genuine weakness: contact with chickens temporarily incapacitates him — a detail the series treated as real character drama as much as a running joke. The Ranger Key captures his suit’s core visual identity — the two-tone color split, the chest detail, the distinctive helmet shape — condensed into the compact upper-body format that defines the entire line.

Go-Busters, Gokaiger, and the International Angle

Gokaiger carries a strong reputation among Super Sentai fans outside Japan. Its pirate theme, the appearance of warriors from across the franchise’s history, and its tightly constructed scripts are consistently cited as highlights of the series. It was not straightforwardly adapted into Power Rangers — Power Rangers Super Megaforce (2014) used some of its footage but told a completely separate story — which has kept demand for Japanese-original Gokaiger merchandise present among international fans who want the source material.

Go-Busters itself was skipped during the regular annual adaptation cycle, then adapted much later as Power Rangers Beast Morphers in 2019 by Hasbro. That belated Western release introduced Red Buster’s counterpart to a new audience and drew retrospective attention back to the original Japanese series and the merchandise released during its broadcast run — including the Ranger Keys issued in 2012 that represented its cast within the Gokaiger toy format.
