Titled Sun King Legend, it was the 21st entry in a theatrical series that had released one new film every spring since 1980. The story drew on original concepts by franchise creator Fujiko F. Fujio, who had passed away in 1996 — placing it in what fans often call the post-original-author era, a period that generates genuine debate among long-time followers even as the films continued to attract solid audiences.

As in many Doraemon theatrical stories, the characters take on the costume and visual language of whatever world they enter. Here, Doraemon appears in Maya-inspired dress: an orange conical hat bearing red question-mark decorations and orange side flaps, a blue top, layered green and brown tunic, a yellow bell-shaped pendant, and a brown segmented lower half. He holds a yellow spear with a grey tip and stands on a green circular base, mouth open in his characteristically expressive way. The whole design captures the film’s ancient-world aesthetic translated onto one of anime’s most recognizable characters.

Furuta, Choco Egg, and the Food-Toy Moment That Defined an Era

This figure was made by Furuta Confectionery, a candy maker based in Higashiosaka, as part of its Choco Egg line. The concept was simple and effective: an egg-shaped chocolate that split open to reveal a capsule holding a small painted PVC figure inside. When Furuta launched an animal-themed Choco Egg series in late 1999 — with figures sculpted by Kaiyodo — the response was extraordinary. The line became a cultural phenomenon and triggered a wave of competing food-toy releases across the Japanese market.

The product type itself belongs to a Japanese category called shokugan, a contraction of the words for food and toy, describing any candy or snack packaged alongside a collectible. The Choco Egg boom of 1999 to the early 2000s marked a turning point for shokugan: it moved the format from a childhood snack extra into something adult collectors bought deliberately. The Movie Selection series, including this Sun King Legend lineup, rode that momentum directly — swapping wildlife subjects for Doraemon characters dressed in film-specific costumes. The sculptor for this particular character lineup has not been confirmed in available sources, which is worth noting since the celebrated Kaiyodo collaboration applied specifically to the animal sets.
