From the 1970s onward, publishers recognized the format as an ideal canvas for character art, and bookstore-exclusive shitajiki became a recurring form of promotional giveaway. This mini version was produced for Shueisha’s Natsucomi campaign — the popular shorthand for “Natsu no Comic Fair,” the publisher’s annual summer promotion run in partnership with bookstores across Japan. Customers who purchased a qualifying selection of manga volumes during the 2019 summer campaign could receive items like this one as a free gift. The board carries a “NOT FOR SALE” designation, confirming it was distributed without a retail price and never entered normal commercial channels. The artwork features monochrome line art against a white ground: Gabimaru at the center, holding a spiral-patterned candy on a stick and dressed in a motif that evokes watermelon patterns, while Yui appears behind him in a straw hat, fishing rod in hand. The Dark Fantasy World Behind the Summer Art

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a manga by Yuji Kaku, serialized in Shueisha’s digital magazine Shonen Jump+ from January 2018 to January 2021 and collected across thirteen volumes. Set in the Edo period, it follows a group of death-row convicts dispatched to a mysterious island said to hold an elixir of immortality. The story blends brutal action with philosophical questions about what makes life worth living — a tone that makes the carnival-style pencil board illustration all the more striking as a contrast. At the heart of the story is Gabimaru, a master ninja from the hidden village of Iwagakure, trained from childhood to suppress every feeling. His epithet, “Empty Gabimaru,” reflects the person he was raised to become: a weapon without attachment. His wife Yui, the daughter of the village’s own chief, changed that. She is the reason Gabimaru wants to survive, and her presence — even when she is physically absent from the plot — shapes every decision he makes. The summer giveaway illustration captures the two characters in an unguarded, playful moment that the manga itself rarely provides, and was likely drawn specifically for the Natsucomi campaign rather than adapted from an existing published image, though this cannot be stated with certainty.

A Pre-Anime Artifact from Jigokuraku’s Rising Phase

The MAPPA-produced anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise reached Netflix and Crunchyroll in 2023, introducing the series to a large international audience. VIZ Media had already been publishing the English-language manga edition, giving English-speaking readers access to Kaku’s original work ahead of that. This pencil board predates all of it — produced roughly eighteen months into the serialization, when approximately four or five volumes had been released and the series was still building its readership. The artwork reflects the manga’s original line-drawing style rather than any animation production aesthetic. Bookstore campaign items like this one are not restocked after the promotion period ends and were never available through official channels outside Japan, meaning international fans had no direct route to obtain one at the time it was distributed.
