What Makes Quaxly’s POKEMOFU Figure Feel Different

Quaxly is the Water-type starter from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the ninth mainline generation released for Nintendo Switch in November 2022. With its duck-like silhouette — white body, blue cap-shaped head bearing a wave motif, yellow beak — Quaxly became one of the most immediately recognized new characters in the franchise the moment players made their opening choice in the Paldea region.

This figure belongs to Bandai Namco’s POKEMOFU Mascot series, sixth installment. The name “POKEMOFU” is generally understood to combine “Pokemon” with “mofu-mofu,” a Japanese sound-descriptive word for a soft, fluffy tactile sensation — which makes it an apt label, because the defining feature of every figure in this line is flocking.

What Flocking Actually Means

Flocking is a manufacturing process in which short fibers are electrostatically applied — standing upright — onto an adhesive-coated surface. The result is a dense, pile-like finish closer in feel to velvet or fine felt than to the smooth painted plastic or soft vinyl most toy collectors are used to. In Japan, flocked character goods have a long history as their own collectible format, distinct from both hard-painted figures and plush toys, with a dedicated fanbase that values the tactile difference as much as the visual one.

The POKEMOFU Mascot series applies this technique to small, palm-sized figures on round black bases — a standard mascot-figure format designed to sit neatly on a shelf or desk. This Quaxly figure renders the character with wings lightly spread, the full body in flock: white torso, pale-blue cap-shaped head with its wave detail, yellow beak, and light-blue feet.

Quaxly, Scarlet and Violet, and the Starter Collector Community

Starter Pokemon carry particular weight in collector culture across every generation. Because players choose exactly one at the beginning of the game, each starter accumulates personal attachment across a large share of that generation’s audience. Quaxly, Sprigatito, and Fuecoco — the three Paldea starters — have all sustained collector interest since Scarlet and Violet’s launch, and starter figures from any generation tend to hold steady demand over time.

Quaxly’s evolutionary line adds a layer of character. Its final form, Quaquaval, is modeled on a flamenco dancer, directly reflecting the Paldea region’s Spanish and Iberian cultural inspiration. The arc from a small, earnest duckling to an elaborate stage performer gives Quaxly a narrative thread that resonates even outside the game itself.

Bandai Namco, formed from the 2005 merger of Bandai and Namco, is one of Japan’s largest entertainment and toy companies and holds major official licenses across the Pokemon product range. The POKEMOFU Mascot series was released for the Japanese domestic market, so outside Japan it is available only through import.
