The Franchises Behind the Characters

Golden Kamuy is a manga by Noda Satoru, serialized in Weekly Young Jump from 2014 until its conclusion in 2022 across 31 volumes and 314 chapters. Set in Meiji-era Hokkaido and Sakhalin, it follows a war veteran and a young Ainu woman on a survival-driven hunt for hidden gold, woven through with detailed depictions of Ainu culture and historical references. The series won the Manga Taisho Award in 2016, was adapted into four anime seasons, and a theatrical film followed in 2024. Outside Japan, VIZ Media publishes the English edition, giving the series an established readership across North America and Europe.

Sanrio has been creating original characters since 1960. Osarunomonkichi — a small brown monkey — debuted in 1974, placing him in the same generation as Hello Kitty and My Melody. He is less internationally prominent than some Sanrio characters, but has remained part of the lineup for over five decades. In recent years, Sanrio has pursued active collaboration programs with anime and manga franchises, pairing its characters with properties including Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan. Golden Kamuy is among the titles to have received that treatment.

Why This Specific Pairing Resonates with Fans

The match between Shiraishi and Monkichi is not decorative coincidence. Within Golden Kamuy, Shiraishi is a recurring comic character — the Escape King, able to dislocate any joint in his body — and he is also consistently described, within the story itself, as having a monkey-like face. That description is a running joke across the manga and its fandom. Pairing him with Sanrio’s monkey character is the kind of casting fans recognize immediately: both the joke and the reason for it land the moment you know either character. It is the detail that distinguishes a thoughtful collaboration from a generic cross-promotion.
