K-On!, the TV Series, and the 2011 Film

K-On! originated as a four-panel manga by the artist known as Kakifly, serialized in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara magazine. Kyoto Animation adapted it into an anime television series, with the first season airing from April to June 2009 and the second running from April to September 2010. Both seasons center on the Light Music Club of Sakuragaoka High School — five members named Yui, Ritsu, Mio, Tsumugi, and Azusa — and the loose, affectionate rhythms of their music-driven school life.

K-On! The Movie, released in Japanese theaters on December 3, 2011, is a theatrical extension set within the timeline of the second season. The story sends the club on a school trip to London. This card is a tie-in item from the Kyoto Animation Collection line released around the film’s theatrical run; given that release date, the card is estimated to have been produced in 2011–2012, though the precise window has not been independently confirmed.

International Collectors and the Appeal of KyoAni’s Official Goods

K-On! carries well-established international recognition. The series was licensed for English-speaking regions by Bandai Namco (then Bandai Visual) and continues to be a reference point for the slice-of-life genre among fans in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Kyoto Animation’s in-house merchandise occupies a more limited distribution. The studio sold its own-brand goods primarily through its official shop and at events in Japan, which restricts how much reaches international buyers. After the 2019 arson attack on the studio, global attention to Kyoto Animation intensified significantly, and that renewed interest has extended to the studio’s physical collectibles.
