Tao Qian SR Card — Sangokushi Taisen 3, Han Faction (033)

Tao Qian SR Card Romance of the Three Kingdoms Taisen 3 Han 033

The Card, the Game, and How It Worked

Sangokushi Taisen 3 is the third generation of Sega’s arcade card game series, which launched in 2005 and dominated Japanese game centers through the late 2000s. The system worked by embedding a camera in the cabinet’s table surface: physical cards placed on the play field were read in real time, and moving a card moved its corresponding unit on screen. Blending tabletop strategy with live digital play, it influenced a generation of successor systems including Data Carddass and Ganbaride.

Cards were not sold in packages — they dropped from the machine during play, one or a few per session. The rarity scale ran C → UC → R → SR, with SR (Super Rare) near the top. Within the SR tier, cards carry a secondary grade of Tian (Heaven), Di (Earth), or Ren (Human); this card is Di-grade, as shown by the gold emblem in its upper right corner. Card number 033 places it in the Han faction lineup — units representing figures loyal to the authority of the later Han dynasty.

In game terms, Tao Qian is classed as an archer unit, denoted by a purple bow-and-arrow icon, with balanced stats of 5 in both military strength and intelligence. His unique skill is listed as “Senran no Ichibanyari,” a name that suggests a first-strike or vanguard-type ability, though the precise effect varied across game versions and is difficult to confirm with certainty.

Tao Qian: Governor, Ally, and Three Kingdoms Figure

Tao Qian (132–194 CE) was the real governor of Xu Province during the turbulent final decades of the Han dynasty, overseeing territory corresponding to present-day Jiangsu and southern Shandong. He appears in both the official history Sanguozhi and the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, most notably during Cao Cao’s military campaigns into Xu Province in the early 190s, when Tao Qian sought aid from Liu Bei. The episode he is best remembered for is his dying decision to entrust the province to Liu Bei rather than to his own sons — a choice that became a turning point in Liu Bei’s early story.

Among Three Kingdoms figures, Tao Qian sits below the first rank of commanders like Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, or Cao Cao. His role is more political and transitional than that of a front-line general, which gives this card a quieter personality within a set that skews toward prominent military figures — and a distinct place within the Han faction lineup.

Arcade Cards as Japanese Game Center Artifacts

Cards from Sangokushi Taisen essentially never circulated outside Japan during the game’s active period, which ran roughly from 2005 into the early 2010s. Each card came from a play session on a dedicated Sega cabinet; there was no retail equivalent. That distribution model made every physical card an artifact of Japanese game center culture at one of its most inventive moments — something that simply could not be obtained without being there.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms IP carries broad recognition across China, Taiwan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, as well as among history readers worldwide. The artwork on each Sangokushi Taisen card was commissioned from Japanese illustrators, making these cards a distinctly Japanese visual interpretation of Chinese historical subjects — a cultural intersection that draws interest from collectors invested in both traditions.
